Family Counseling - John Eckenwiler

John's experiences with school-age children, and particularly adolescents, is extensive. He was the assistance program director of a psychiatric hospital, which included both adult and adolescent units. He has held contracts to consult with students in schools, was the Outreach Director for a runaway shelter in New Jersey, was an assistant program director for the Child and Family Program as the Aurora Mental Health Center, is a listed provider for a suicide-prevention program for teens and provided anger management groups for a large probation department. His formal training is in family systems.

Of all the relationships people have, the parent/child relationship is perhaps the most intense emotionally. Power struggles and self-defeating interaction patterns can be easy to fall into and really tough to eliminate. John's approach is to build rapport with parents and especially kids so that participation in a constructive process can begin. Some kind of change or adjustment is usually required by all involved, and the key is getting everyone to step forward at the same time.

Families - and kids - face lots of challenges these days, such as both parents working, divorce adjustment, a parent with personal problems, job uncertainty of the parents, school and social demands, or just trying to blend lots of different personalities at home. A trained family therapist is by far the most able to offer help with these common problems. Parents are often at their wits end trying to manage the family, and parent-strategy sessions are offered to help relieve the stress of this and find solutions that really work.

Late afternoon times can usually be arranged to accomodate school hours.
